Daily Adventure: 2

 8/1/2010 1:40 AM

"Sweetheart, go sit down in the corner and shut your mouth." Cara stuck her tongue out at Mike, who was still grinning cheekily at her.

"Well? Go on. The adults are trying to talk. Go on." Cara raised her eyebrow.

"Sweetheart? Oh. Okay. Man, you are going to have fun tonight. Alone!" She said tartly, moving away from his desk, and sitting down in one of the armchairs in front of him. She had been trying to file a report for an hour, but as usual, Mike wanted her to be the last one. Kimmy, Justin, Tyrone, and Maria had all submitted their paperwork. It was Billy that was taking the longest.

It wasn't his fault. Billy had the largest assignment that week; a murder in Greenwich. With almost no evidence.

Cara bit her lip. An assignment like that could make a detective's career. She had been the first to join Mike's agency, and still had been stuck on the easy assignments.

"Cara. Cara, Wake the hell up!" Cara started, looking up at Mike's grin. There were days she liked his smile, and others when it was incredibly annoying.

"Alright. How'd the case go?" Mike asked, sitting on the edge of the desk. Cara crossed her legs, folding down her skirt. She handed him the folder, regarding him coolly.

"You mean the case about the dog thief? Yeah, it wasn't that hard. The lady forgot to pick it up from the pound after returning from vacation. Did you know she suffers from short term memory loss?" It was dripping in sarcasm. Mike laughed, flipping through the folder, but barely looking at the pages. Cara  finally reached the end of her patience.

"Mike! When am I going to get a real assignment? I was your first agent, the first one to join. And you give the biggest case to Billy? Who just started working here? And before that to Amy, who you ended up having to fire because she was stealing from our funds? Where's my case?" Cara knew she was shining. But dammit, she had a point! Mike lost his smile. He walked over and sat next her.

"You remember when i first started this business? It was the first year of college. Me, you and Jason together. It was brilliant, a lost and find service for the students. But then our professors starting asking for help, and then the police got wind of us. We became the best detectives around. And it was you, me and Jason. Well we lost Jason along the way. But Cara," He turned her face toward him, gazing at her seriously.

"I don't want to lose you too. I couldn't stand sending you out there, with all the criminals, knowing you weren't safe. We're still in college for Pete's sake! Sometimes I doubt we could do it together, like we're just kidding ourselves." Cara smiled sadly, hugging him.

"We can make it. But that doesn't change the fact that I can do it. I've been waiting my whole life for a big case! And keeping me away from it is only going to force me to leave!" She said. Mike smiled.

"Yeah I know. So I'm going to ask for a favor. A real favor, that you must promise me you'll comply with." Cara frowned, sensing a trap. She pulled away, staring at him suspiciously.

"What? Why are you looking at me like that?" He asked, laughing. Cara shook her head, laughing as well.

"You're about to trick me, I know that!" Mike shrugged, nodding his head. He was too busy thinking about his roommate's party that night to be very subtle. Of course there was some bigger news that was worrying him more.

"Listen Cara, this is serious. I've been keeping tabs on Jason since he left." he started pacing around the room, Cara's eyes following him.

"You mean since the fight." Mike winced.

"Yes sweetheart, since the damn fight! Listen, you mind not reminded me of that stupid fight every time Jason's name comes up?" Cara shrugged, falling silent again.

"I've been keeping tabs. I want you to accompany me on this new case. It's big, I promise, but it's also kind of....troubling." Cara eyed him again.

"So that's you condition? That I have to follow you around like a puppy dog?" Her temper was starting to flare up again. She was not going to be babysat!

"Yes that's the condition! Sorry I fit's not good enough for you! Now can you shut up?" He yelled at her. Cara grinned. They loved annoying each other.

"Alright what's the case about?" She asked, looking back down at her notes.

"Jason's missing."

Daily Adventure: 1

"So. You came back." Sera was turned away from the door, staring at the blank stone wall. But she heard someone in the doorway. She knew who it was. There was only one person it could be, after all.

"Sera. Where's everyone else?" She closed her eyes tightly. Even after all these years, that voice brought back so many memories. Good memories, happy memories. Before the fight, and before everything had ended. She bit her lip. After everything that happened, she still loved hearing his voice, and knowing that he was safe.

"They left Brandon. They left a long time ago." She finally turned, facing the man. He still had short gold hair, chocolate brown eyes, and a strong jaw. It was older than she remembered, less child-ish. Like he had gone through troubles. He had more scars on his arms than she remembered. Of course, it had been almost three years since he had departed the castle, and his position.

"Left? Why would they leave? What happened here? The castle's almost destroyed..." Brandon trailed off, spotting Sera's look. She was angry of course. Angry that he would leave the Gaer, that they weren't good enough for him to stay.

"What happened Sera?" She glared at him. Her nails formed into silver claws, and she rose from her chair.

"Alex died. Ray killed herself. You left. Lily betrayed us. Take your pick of what happened. The point is, I was the only one who stayed." Brandon's face fell.

"Alex and Ray are gone? Lily......but how is that possible? What happened?" Sera felt her feelings soften, seeing Brandon so shocked. His normally tan face was almost white now. She couldn't help it. It wasn't his fault, that all this had happened. She walked over, shrinking back her claws, touching his shoulder slightly.

"Alex went off to find you, after you left. He was killed soon after he left the gates. lily had let the daemons know about his departure. They were waiting for him. Ray was devastated, but I held her back, I wouldn't let her leave. Lily flew off with the daemons. A few mights later, I found Ray. She left a note for you." Sera knelt by him. HSe retrieved a folded letter from the pocket of her dress, and handed the yellowed parchment to Brandon.

"i never read it, but I've carried it around, in case you ever did come back. You don't have to read it..." She stopped mid-sentence. Brandon took the letter, his hand shaking slightly. He unfolded it slowly and began to read aloud.

"Brother. I don't know how to blame you for what you caused. Alex was your best friend. You must have known he would try to follow. But I can't blame you. I know Alex wouldn't want that.

But I'm angry. I am giving my life up to the goddess Eri tonight, but I know that my soul will not find peace. So i have one last request for you. One last favor for your little sister.

Kill Lily." Sera gasped quietly, covering her mouth. This wasn't the Ray they remembered, always happy. Brandon took her hand and continued reading.

"It is Lily who caused this. She broke the vow of the Gaer, so it is only right that she be punished. Perhaps, with the death of Lily, my soul will return to the valley. Eri has promised me new life, with Alex. And you.

Sera, do not blame yourself for my sacrifice. It is my own choice. You are like my sister, and never forget that I love you too. I hope you will accompany Brandon on his quest.

Never forget this. No matter the result, whether Lily kills you, or you kill her, we will be together. One day. Ray." Brandon sighed. He folded up the letter carefully, making sure to follow the creases exactly. Finally, he tucked it back into his pocket and turned to Sera.

"Well this complicates things." He said. He gave her a tiny smile, trying to cheer her up. But it was hollow, and she could see that.

"How so?" She asked. She got up and walked back to her chair. Suddenly, she felt weak and tired. Ryker, her favorite silver tiger, came up and nuzzled her legs. Sera smiled at it, rubbing his soft fur, remembering when she first got the little tiger cub. Brandon walked over, sitting down next to her.

"Well. Lily's waiting outside. I've been traveling with her for two weeks now."

Maybe Truth Sucks

Yeah, maybe it does. But don't worry, I'm completely ready to face the storms.
